We&#8217;re starting our 158th season in Madison continuing\u00a0 the singing traditions of Germany.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For all\u00a0immigrants, there\u00a0exists the\u00a0often-documented\u00a0tug-of-war between assimilation and\u00a0tradition.\u00a0Many immigrants chose to assimilate into American society,\u00a0believing that to be best way\u00a0to share the American opportunity. Others, at the same time,\u00a0felt strongly about continuing their\u00a0traditions and culture. These traditions were applied to\u00a0all aspects of life.\u00a0Involvement in literature, song, social and political involvement, attire and philosophy of life enabled\u00a0immigrants was pursued at the same time the best of American culture was adopted.\u00a0We are <em>still<\/em> interested in how groups maintain tradition.\u00a0I am pleased to offer an example from a recent National Public Radio interview of one of our members, Mel Grulke. The interview touches on this topic\u00a0very well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"NPR Interview of Mel Grulke\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=102537759\" target=\"_blank\">(NPR) interview<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Madison M\u00e4nnerchor continues the German choral singing tradition as well as the\u00a0conviviality (gem\u00fctlichkeit) that Mel talks about. One of my favorite songs is Lebe, Liebe, Lache (Live, Love, Laugh).
