While casually searching\u00a0 on line for the archives of M\u00e4nnerch\u00f6re that were established at about the same\u00a0time as our own, I came across the <a title=\"Indianapolis M\u00e4nnerchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maennerchor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indianapolis M\u00e4nnerchor<\/a> Archives\u00a0that are housed by the Indiana University-Purdue University <a title=\"Ruth Lilly Collections\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ulib.iupui.edu\/special\/collections\/german-american\/mss040\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth Lilly Collections <\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Archives. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What a treasure trove of\u00a0historical documents, ranging from the by-laws of the Athenaeum Turnverein to correspondence, meeting notes, photographs, and many of\u00a0 the meeting and operational documents.\u00a0\u00a0The actual documents are not on line, but the references to them are.<\/p>\n<p>Some other references appear on the site:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Emmerich, C.E., <em>Festschrift zur Feier des Vierzigjaehrigen Stiftungsfestes des Indianapolis Maennerchor.<\/em> Indianapolis, 1894.<\/p>\n<p>Keller, Josef, <em>Festschrift zur feier des Fuenfzigjahrigen Stiftungsfest des Indianapolis Maennerchor.<\/em> Indianapolis, 1904.<\/p>\n<p>Probst, George Theodore. <em>The Germans in Indianapolis: 1840-1918.<\/em> Revised and illustrated edition by Eberhard Reichman. Pp. 111-140.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I liked the Ruth Lilly Collection site&#8217;s\u00a0reference to the failed European Revolutions of 1848 as\u00a0being a major cause\u00a0of this incredible\u00a0migration to the US.\u00a0\u00a0Similarly, Wagner, himself, \u00a0had been an enthusiast for the 1848 revolutions and had been an active participant in the <a title=\"May Uprising in Dresden\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/May_Uprising_in_Dresden\">Dresden Revolution of 1849<\/a>, as a consequence of which he was forced to live for many years in exile from <a title=\"Germany\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Wagner\">Germany<\/a>. [Wikipedia]\u00a0In his <a title=\"Die Kunst und die Revolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_and_Revolution\" target=\"_blank\">Die Kunst und die Revolution<\/a>\u00a0Wagner explained his ideals in the context of the failed 1848 revolutions.\u00a0Wagner envisioned a society that\u00a0was like his concept of ancient Greece. However, shortly after the Dresden Revolution, Wagner fled to avoid imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Getting back to the <a title=\"Collections\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ulib.iupui.edu\/special\/collections\/german-american\/mss040\" target=\"_blank\">Collections <\/a>web site, do visit it and get an idea of the various documents in the collections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Indianapolis M\u00e4nnerchor website is very interesting, well implemented, and a joy to visit.
