Hallo. My name is Daniel Grimes. I am a 31 year old history writer and the author of “The American Revolution: The Battle of Germantown and the Fight for Philadelphia,” “Braddock’s Defeat: George Washington and the French and Indian War,” and “”The Hessians and the American Revolution: The Whole Story.” I specialize in the Revolutionary War period and American history in general. The Hessians in particular made up a substantial part of England’s manpower in the Revolution and fought in nearly every major battle from Long Island to Yorktown. My e book about the Hessians describes their role in the war in great detail. Fascinating facts about the Hessians and those they were involved with are highlighted. There are individual stories about many of the Hessians and what happened to them after the war. The impact of these troops on both German and American culture is discussed. Many of the Hessians stayed in America after the war. If you wish to buy the book, go to amazon.com (kindle edition) and type in “The Hessians And The American Revolution: The Whole Story” by Daniel Roy Grimes. It does not cost much at all and contains a lot of unique information that you will not hear anywhere else. It is also available in the Apple iBookstore (for ipad or itunes) and Barnes and Noble (for Nook) In addition, I have a website with further information

Gottlieb Grimm was originally from Bottingen in the Kingdom of Württemberg, Germany. He was born in 1831 and learned the craft of bookbinding from his father, Gelasius Grimm. He emigrated to America in 1849 and settled in Madison, WI in 1850 where he began his life as a Bookbinder. It is reported that Gottlieb bound the first book ever in Madison. The book was actually a collection of back issues of Graham’s Magazine, which Madison banker Simeon Mills had saved and wanted bound. As a side note, Gottlieb was also a founding member of the Madison Maennerchor, a German singing society started in 1852 which patterned after the similar groups in the “old country”.

The ambiance of a beautiful and historic sanctuary, the familiar carols and music, the sound of the language as the story of Christmas unfolds, all add up to a one-of-a-kind experience for the soul, something that often gets lost in our modern day observance of Christmas. The congregation of St. John’s United Church of Christ, assisted by the Monroe Swiss Singers, annually offers this beautiful Christmas Communion service conducted entirely in German. The Rev. Dr. William T. “Mike” Heath, senior pastor at St. John’s, and the Rev. Gretchen Sylvester, associate pastor, welcome all to the service. Additional information to be found on the Web here: www.MonroeSwissSingers.org/germanservice.html

Genealogical Resources for German-American Ancestry, Online and Off

Instructor: Lori Bessler

This hands-on computer workshop will help the family researcher identify resources that are found on the Web as well as those that are not online. There are many collections that record the lives of our ancestors in Germany as well as their lives after they have arrived here in the United States, but finding them can be daunting. The strategies presented here will help break down brick walls that genealogists may encounter in their research.

Lori Bessler has worked at the Wisconsin Historical Society Library Archives since 1988 as a Reference Librarian and Outreach Coordinator and for over 20 years has lectured throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest on genealogical topics. She has been researching family history for over 35 years.

Tracing Your Jewish Roots from German-Speaking Europe

Instructor: Fran Loeb Luebke

Co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies.

This workshop will provide an overview of resources and research techniques that address the unique challenges faced by genealogists looking for their Jewish ancestors from German-speaking Europe. The workshop will cover sources that are available online and those that are not, focusing on specifically Jewish records such as name change documents, Matrikel lists, cemetery records, and “Schutzgeld” tax documents. As more Jewish records become available to the public, a successful family researcher needs to be a good detective and follow many leads.

Fran Loeb Luebke has a Masters degree in history and has been tracing and tracking her own ancestors for over 35 years.

Reading Old German Script

Instructor: Karyl Rommelfanger

Do you have correspondence from a German ancestor written in a script that you cannot read? Do you have trouble finding your ancestor’s name in an official document, because you can’t make out the letters? This workshop will acquaint participants with the basics of the Old German written alphabet so that they can transcribe words into modern script. Bring your own documents! After providing a general introduction, the instructor will assist you with your specific questions.

Karyl Rommelfanger is a retired German teacher from the Manitowoc Public School System. She has transcribed and translated documents written in the Old German script for 25 years and has previously taught Old German script workshops for the Max Kade Institute.
